One of the beautiful things about mobile devices, particularly Windows Phone, is that you can personalize the devices with various themes, colors and wallpapers. It is a novelty for sure but still fun to do nevertheless. Now Microsoft has taken it a step further by allowing you to create a Windows Phone Start Button wallpaper that is customized to reflect who you are and your interests. The wallpaper is designed to be for your Windows PC desktop but with a little editing can easily be adapted to be the wallpaper of your Windows Phone.
To start, go to the Windows Phone Start Button creator website which is located at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/downloads/start-button-generator.mspx. Once there you will be asked to select four icons that best represent who you are and your likings. As you choose an icon other related icons will disappear to make sure you don’t accidentally double-pick a similar item.
Once you create your wallpaper you have the option to save it in a variety of sizes from 1024×768 up to 1620×1024. With it saved, open up the file in your favorite photo editing application. In my case I use Microsoft Digital Image Suite. Use the application’s Crop feature to select the area to crop the image down to in order to fit your phone. I am using a LG eXpo and HTC HD2 so the display size is 480×800 and that is what I edit the image down to in Digital Image Suite.
Once you have the image cropped and saved, upload it to your device via Windows Mobile Device Center then go to Start>Settings>Today and check the “Use this picture as the background” box. Use the Browse button to locate and select your newly created wallpaper then OK your way back to your phone’s Home screen. Ta-Da! There is your new wallpaper!
The creator is free to use and a lot of fun. Enjoy making your Windows Phone more reflective of you!
